Back in October, it was confirmed that Tivat in Montenegro was one of the winners, and out of 150 countries this is a massive achievement. The judges recognised the initiatives that had put in place to develop the Tivatska Solila (Tivat Saltplain) into a Special Nature reserve, making it a highly sustainable site for many years to come. Danica Banjevic who is the local tourism organization’s director, who was speaking at the ceremony, mentioned that ‘with the good practice story and thanks to the successful change in management we were able to realize many good initiatives in this city, both by the public and private sector’. It’s extremely encouraging for further development of sustainable land in both Tivat and Montenegro in general.
Banjevic went on to add that ‘now the work really begins and we have to put a lot of effort into development, monitoring and reporting to reach the goal of the level-3 certification. Tivat will gain information on the development, as well as guidelines for further improvements by the Green Destination advisors and auditors’.
There were many partners involved in this first stage, and special mention must go to the Public enterprise, the Secretary for Investments department, Spatial planning for Sustainable Development, the department for Communal affairs and Transport, the Environmental protection agency and other strategic partners & alliances.
It’s interesting times for Montenegro, and given that their landscape is full of ideal opportunities in which to create more sustainable areas, who knows what will be developed over the next few years.
