The Summer ‘Theatre City’ Festival is being welcomed back to Budva for the 36th time in its history, and lasting from the 7th July to the 31st August it transforms this beautiful and culturally important city into a ‘live stage’ with every one of its squares, plazas and piazzas playing host to a series of plays, musicals, live concerts and poem readings.

Dating back to 1987, the festival is one of the most prestigious events in the calendar attracting thousands of both domestic and local tourists, many of whom could become part of a scene or artistic act, even as they go about their walks throughout the town. Using all of its architectural and special advantages, the programme always meets a very high quality standard with both International and Montenegrin content performed by a multitude of talent from across the world. Some of the most famous plays to have been done so far include Midsummer Nights Dream, The Path of Jegor, The Tempest, Hamlet, Karolina Nojber, Don Krsto and Othello.

Due to the inclusive nature of the event, which has had a focus of Diversity over the last few years, there are many guests from abroad who are invited to perform such as Australian ‘Strange Fruit’, German ‘Titanik’, Theatre Roma ‘Parlipe’ and ‘Vertigo’ from Israel.

Since 1994, the organisers of the event have also put together an award for the best drama creations by the name of ‘Theatre City’ and an award for the best Literacy creations by the name of ‘Stefan Mitrov Ljubisa’. The last receiver of the ‘Theatre City' award was Boris Liješevićback in 2019/2020 and the last receiver of the ‘Stefan Mitrov Ljubisa’ award was Radoslav Petković.

Part of the European Festivals Association, for which it won International Recognition back in 2019/2020 the festival is well worth visiting, and definitely a ‘must see’ whilst you are here. Traditionally it goes on for several weeks, so there’s always plenty on offer, so you won’t be disappointed!
