The Mimosa Festival of Montenegro - Herceg Novi

The Mimosa Festival of Montenegro, held in the picturesque coastal town of Herceg Novi, is a vibrant celebration marking the arrival of spring. This traditional festival, taking place between February and March, honors the mimosa flower, a symbol deeply embedded in the region's cultural and natural heritage. Established in 1969 by the Tourism Alliance of Boka Bay and the Herceg Novi Municipality, the festival has grown into one of the most significant and long-standing events in the area.

Described as both a carnival and a folk festival, it is characterized by streets lined with bundles of mimosas and the serving of fish and wine along the Herceg Novi Riviera. Fresh sardines are especially prevalent, and the fact that they are grilled streetside, makes it even more rich and plentiful. The days feature a rich program of music, culture, and gastronomy, celebrating not only the blooming of the mimosa flower but also the local traditions and community spirit. The bright yellow blossoms of the mimosa trees cover the region, signaling the end of winter and the onset of spring, bringing together locals and visitors in a festive atmosphere.

The festival's program is diverse, including fairs, tastings, masquerade balls, and various other events that fill the month-long celebration. One of the main attractions is the flower procession, which passes through the main streets of Herceg Novi, bringing together different groups, including local schools, music bands, artists, and other communities, showcasing creative and floral arrangements. Other activities include a swimming championship, an archery & shooting cup, car races and the ‘karmic’ all of which are designed to highlight community engagement and the festival's role in promoting tourism and the cultural identity of Herceg Novi.

Over the years, the Mimosa Festival has become an important part of Herceg Novi's identity, organized annually to honor the mimosa flower as the symbol of the Herceg Novi Riviera, as well as the city itself.
