On September 28, the Montenegrin Statistical Office released its latest tourism statistics, revealing positive trends in the country's tourism sector for the month of August.

On September 28, the Montenegrin Statistical Office released its latest tourism statistics, revealing positive trends in the country's tourism sector for the month of August.

In August, Montenegro welcomed a total of 221,416 foreign tourists, marking a notable 7% increase compared to the same period the previous year. Additionally, the total number of tourists who chose Montenegro as their destination for the month of August witnessed a solid 6% year-on-year growth, totaling 240,754 visitors.

Overnight stays in the country experienced a healthy uptick, rising from 1.043 million in August 2022 to 1.085 million in August 2023.
Breaking down the origin of these tourists, visitors from Serbia accounted for the largest share of overnight stays, contributing 26% to the total. Bosnia followed closely behind with a 9% share, while France rounded out the top three with 6%.

When it came to choosing their accommodations, seaside resorts remained the most popular choice among tourists, capturing a significant 83% of all overnight stays. Montenegro's capital, Podgorica, attracted 9.4% of visitors, while mountain resorts and other resort areas accounted for 4.4% and 3.2% of overnight stays, respectively.

Considering that Montenegro relies heavily on Tourism, as it accounts for around 25% of the total GDP, these statistics paint a promising picture of Montenegro's tourism industry, demonstrating a growing interest in the country as a desirable destination among international visitors.

In response to the increased Tourism numbers the state owners of Podgorica Airport have submitted plans to the government for a new terminal with a price tag of between €30m to €40m. Having served 1m passengers this year, the airport needs new investment whilst a new state of the art terminal will increase passenger numbers as well as the potential for further international routes.
