New Routes to Montenegro Set to Further Boost Tourism Numbers from the UK

Tourism is a highly important economic entity for Montenegro contributing a total of around 25% of its GDP, welcoming more than three times its overall population in foreign arrivals every year. Though one might consider it a country still in its infancy when compared to its counterparts, it’s consistent high ratings over the last few years have been highly successful with figures revealing strong growth both pre and post pandemic.

In terms of the UK market the National Tourism Organisation of Montenegro recently released their report for 2022, showing that there were 72,071 total visitors to Montenegro from the UK and that number is set to increase substantially in 2023. In fact, it was a record increase in 2022, given that between January and August there were 52,000 visitors from the UK, an 87% increase on the previous year. Globally, Montenegro received a total of 1.7m visitors in 2022, which was an increase of 25% from 2021 and 82% increase from 2019.

The good news for those wishing to travel to Montenegro from the UK, is that along with Wizz Air, Ryanair and Easyjet, Jet2 and Jet2.com announced its new routes from Manchester to Tivat, which having already started on the 1st May, will be in place right through the Summer season, ending at the end of October. Flights are taking place weekly on Monday’s and Thursday’s.

The CEO of Jet2, Steve Heapy, commented recently in the Bolton News that ‘feedback in the Northwest has been telling us that holidays to Montenegro are very much in demand and Montenegro is a destination that customers want to get to’. He added that ‘Since putting the service on people have been booking in their numbers’.

The Director of National Tourism of Montenegro, Ana Tripkovic Markovic was also reported to have commented on the new routes saying that ‘Last year they had about five times more tourists from the UK than in 2021 and we believe that the new routes by Jet2 will ensure such trends continue’.
