Montenegro’s Digital Nomad Visa Scheme Is Imminently Awaiting Final Approval

Much like Spain, Croatia, Portugal & other countries throughout Europe, there is talk of Montenegro introducing a Digital Nomad Visa imminently in order to attract top digital talent to the country on a more permanent basis. If approved by the government, the scheme could be a game changer for those wishing to live & work in Montenegro, without having to apply via the current visa rules & regulations.

The scheme will be open to anyone outside of the EU (so UK Citizens will be allowed to apply) and anyone wishing to qualify for the scheme must be able to show that they are employed by or have a contract with a company located outside of Montenegro. Additionally applicants, for now, must also be able to prove they have a valid passport with at least 6 months validity, have adequate travel insurance, proof of income (as you won’t be eligible for state benefits), hold a return ticket or onward ticket, have a valid email address and present proof of accommodation in Montenegro.

In all likelihood there will also be a small fee for the Digital Nomad visa, which will probably be around €25, although that could change in the future, once the scheme has been fully approved. The hope is that it will be signed off this year, and the programme will start the application process by 2025.

A few benefits of the programme include a 2-year visa permit after which time you could apply for a possible extension of another two years + during the time you are in Montenegro and hold the Digital Nomad Visa there will be no income tax. Any spouse or dependants you have will also be able to join you in Montenegro once the visa has been approved, which could be as little as 30 days.

Montenegro is consistently appearing as one of the best countries to visit globally, and with so much to see and do here, whilst enjoying a temperate climate throughout the year, it would be the perfect place in which to live and work as a Digital Nomad. Very affordable, given the current cost of living crises, it also offers historic towns, amazing landscapes, gorgeous beaches and turquoise seas. There’s Kotor Old Town, the glitz and glamour of Budva & Portonovi Marina, Durmitor National Park, Skadar Lake & Lustica Bay which will soon be home to Montenegro’s first ever 18 hole golf course.
