The prestigious ‘Blue Flag’ award is given to Beaches, Marina’s and Boat Tour companies that have met a strict set of environmental, educational, safety and accessibility criteria as set by the Foundation for Enrivonmental Organization based in Copenhagen. The voluntary scheme which has been in operation for 35 years promotes pure water, clean coasts, safety and access for all, with many countries working hard to ensure they meet requirements as a ‘Blue Flag’ award can significantly increase tourism to the area.

In Montenegro’s case, it has over 200km of coastline with a host of glorious beaches, some of which are the most picturesque in the world with their turquoise waters, sandy shores, and stunning backdrops. Having invested significant amounts of money in Tourism over the last few years it’s wonderful to see the returns given that 41 sites in Montenegro have the Blue Flag for 2023, which includes 40 beaches and 1 Marina. It’s even more impressive given that the Blue Flag is not guaranteed each year and the same site needs to prove every time that they are eligible and have met the demands of the organization.

Spain, Greece & Turkey are placed first, second and third in the list for the greatest number of Sites, with Spain being awarded 731 Blue Flags, Greece 641, and Turkey 588. Montenegro appears 17th on the list out of a possible 49 countries. The key factor here for Montenegro however is how their Blue Flag numbers have grown rapidly over the last decade. If you look back to 2015 for example, only 18 sites in Montenegro met the standard, that increased to 29 in 2019, 32 in 2020, 38 in 2022 and 41 in 2023.

Here's just a few examples of some of the Blue Flag beaches you’ll find across Montenegro, Plavi Horizonti and Kalardovo  in Tivat, San Trope, Dukley, Kamenovo, Pura Vida & Lucice in Budva, Vela and Centar Sutomore in Bar, and lastly, Copacabana, Evropa, Hills and Mojito in Ulcinj.
